Who are We?
Like many of the smaller clubs, we began life as a Jogging Club: one result
of the jogging boom of the early 1980’s. The club emblem was the ROADRUNNER
because it reflected what the sport was then - road running which would
ultimately lead us to a road marathon.
It used to be very trendy to be a jogger and we had up to 75 people of all
abilities leaving HQ for their evening club runs. In fact our remaining
founder member used to own a newsagent (opposite Bounces Road Jet Garage)
where the first runs started and finished. He remembers everyone used to
come back exhausted, thirsty and proceeded to eat all his shop’s ice poles.
He soon moved us out of his shop and into other premises.
Since then, the jogging boom has died, we’ve had to move several more times
and the club has changed its name to a Running Club. We still use the
ROADRUNNER as an emblem but our running has diversified immensely. The
emphasis has moved away from pure road running towrads trail running,
orienteering, track races, cross country and some of the hardest assault
courses devised by man. Some runners take part in a multisport approach
where runing is part of the bigger picture: Triathletes, Duathletes,
Weightlifters and keep-fit fanatics also form part of the club. The reason
for each person has for running can be just as varied as their careers.
We currently have about 70 members varying from those who want to get round
to those who want to get round quickly. Since most people take up running
later in life the majority of our members are over 30. A recent intake in
the ladies section means that we probably have a 40/60 mix between male and
female members.
We are quite a sociable bunch with regular barbecues, nights out (recently
to a greyhound race) and of course the post run drink!
Come down and say hello.
